IIT Roorkee has begun drafting a comprehensive mental health policy for its campus community. The initiative is aimed at strengthening student well-being and may serve as a model for other IITs. The first draft has been prepared by the institute’s Wellness Centre, which supports students, faculty and staff through counselling and related services.
Policy Framework and Consultation
The draft policy has been developed through consultations with the Dean of Student Welfare, the Associate Dean of Student Wellness, in-house clinical psychologists, external advisors and faculty members. The process is intended to create a balanced and professionally informed framework for mental health governance on campus.
Role of SAHYOG 2.0
The initiative was reinforced through SAHYOG 2.0, an inter-IIT dialogue focused on sharing best practices and institutional experiences. Discussions covered existing policies, protocols and governance systems across IITs. Participants examined ways to integrate effective measures into a comprehensive and inclusive mental health framework.
Key Issues Discussed
- Preventive and responsive support systems for students and staff.
- The role of Wellness Centres and counselling cells.
- Standard operating procedures for crisis situations.
- Scope for standardising mental health policies across IITs.
Broader Institutional Significance
The discussions align with recent directions from the Supreme Court of India and the University Grants Commission on mental health governance in higher education. Delegates from all IITs, along with mental health professionals and external experts from several institutions, attended the event. IIT Roorkee leadership stated that mental health and well-being are now critical pillars of excellence in higher education.
