India’s Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA) continues to strengthen scientific temper among school students by introducing them to space science at an early age. The programme is aimed at Class 9 students and is designed to build interest in space science, technology, and applications, while also encouraging them to consider careers in the space sector.
Purpose of YUVIKA
YUVIKA is a student outreach programme focused on early exposure to space science. It helps young learners understand basic concepts in space technology and its practical uses. The initiative also seeks to identify future talent for India’s growing space ecosystem.
Selection Process
Students are selected through a structured and merit-based process. The process includes:
- Online screening of academic credentials.
- Performance in an online quiz competition.
- Final verification of credentials before selection.
This method is intended to ensure fairness and transparency in admissions.
Reach and Inclusion
So far, 1,320 students have benefited from the programme. To widen participation, 15 percent reservation has been provided for students from rural and remote areas. This measure aims to improve access for talented students from diverse backgrounds and regions.
Significance for Science Education
YUVIKA reflects a broader effort to build scientific awareness among youth and strengthen India’s human resource base in space science. By engaging students early, the programme supports long-term capacity building in science, technology, engineering, and space research.
