India Fertiliser Security Remains Strong

India Fertiliser Security Remains Strong

India’s fertiliser supply position remains comfortable, with availability consistently above requirement across major nutrient categories. The Department of Fertilizers has stated that recent claims of shortages are not supported by data. Strong stock levels, advance procurement, and coordinated distribution have kept supplies stable for the recent Rabi season and the current financial year. Preparations for Kharif 2026 are also well underway.

Rabi 2025–26 Supply Position

End-of-Rabi data show that availability exceeded requirement in all major fertilisers. Urea availability stood at 257.59 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) against a requirement of 196.06 LMT. DAP availability was 75.40 LMT against 53.43 LMT. MOP availability was 19.64 LMT against 15.69 LMT. NPK availability reached 117.44 LMT against 82.38 LMT, while SSP availability was 50.10 LMT against 31.19 LMT.

Current Financial Year Availability

Between 1 April 2026 and 23 April 2026, the supply position remained strong. Urea availability was 69.33 LMT against a requirement of 18.17 LMT. DAP availability stood at 22.78 LMT against 5.90 LMT. MOP availability was 8.32 LMT against 1.73 LMT. NPK availability was 52.75 LMT against 7.46 LMT, and SSP availability was 25.60 LMT against 3.30 LMT. This indicates a robust opening position for the coming season.

Kharif 2026 Preparedness

The fertiliser requirement for Kharif 2026 has been assessed at 390.54 LMT. Around 180 LMT, or 46%, is already available as opening stock. This is higher than the usual pre-season level of about 33%. The Government has also strengthened logistics, stock planning, and district-level monitoring to ensure timely supply to farmers.

Import Support And Price Protection

Indian Missions abroad are helping identify alternate sources of supply. Around 25 LMT of urea has been secured through global tendering. Natural gas supply for domestic urea production has also been maintained, with additional LNG and RLNG arranged where needed. Despite sharp global price rises, urea continues to be supplied to farmers at ₹266.5 per 45 kg bag, protecting them from international volatility.
