Dhar in Madhya Pradesh has been selected under the Centre’s Safe Cities project for 2026, marking a major step towards improving women’s safety and urban security. The project is fully funded by the Central Government and will be implemented for at least five years. An allocation of Rs 10 crore has been made for the district.
Project Objective
The main aim is to make public spaces in Dhar safer and more women-friendly. The initiative focuses on stronger surveillance, better civic infrastructure, and improved safety systems in key areas of the city.
Key Safety Measures
- CCTV cameras will be installed at sensitive locations.
- Street lighting will be improved across the city.
- Monitoring mechanisms will be strengthened.
- Pink Toilets will be constructed in public places.
- Women-friendly facilities will be upgraded at tourist spots.
Health and Social Support
Special facilities will be developed in district hospitals and health centres. These will include dedicated waiting areas for women and their families. Awareness campaigns and training programmes will also be conducted to promote community sensitivity towards women’s safety and empowerment.
Strategic Importance of Dhar
Dhar has historical and archaeological significance and is known for its cultural heritage in central India. The project is expected to improve its image as a safe destination for women tourists. The district is also seeing rapid infrastructure growth, including the PM MITRA Park, which is expected to support industrial development and employment generation.
