India Ranks 16th in Responsible Nations Index

India has been ranked 16th among 154 countries in the Responsible Nations Index (RNI), a new global framework that measures how responsibly nations use power in relation to citizens, the environment and the wider world. Singapore topped the index, followed by Switzerland and Denmark. The index shifts attention away from economic size or military strength and places responsibility at the centre of national assessment.

What the Index Measures

The Responsible Nations Index is an initiative of the World Intellectual Foundation. It is the result of a three-year academic and policy exercise. The framework evaluates nations on three pillars – internal responsibility, environmental responsibility and external responsibility. These cover citizen welfare, ecological protection and conduct in the international system.

Key Indicators and Methodology

The index uses seven dimensions and 58 indicators to calculate scores. These include quality of life, governance, social justice, empowerment, economic performance, environmental protection, peace and international economic relations. Data has been drawn from recognised international institutions such as the World Bank, United Nations agencies, IMF, WHO, FAO, ILO and the World Justice Project, using the latest available data as of 2023.

India’s Position in the Rankings

India’s 16th place puts it ahead of several major economies. Italy, France, Albania and Poland complete the top 20. The United States is ranked 66th and China 68th. Japan stands at 38th, the United Kingdom at 25th and Russia at 96th. North Korea is placed near the bottom at 146th out of 154 countries.

Significance of the RNI

The index argues that power without responsibility cannot ensure lasting prosperity. It marks that responsible national conduct depends on institutional integrity, ethical governance and equitable development. The findings also show that several northern and eastern European countries score highly due to strong rule of law, inclusive welfare systems and climate commitments. The RNI offers a new lens to assess nationhood, progress and leadership.
