IOA Launches NOEDP And Reactivates National Olympic Academy

The Indian Olympic Association has launched the National Olympic Education and Development Programme and formally reactivated the National Olympic Academy, marking a major institutional push to strengthen Olympic education, athlete development and sports governance in India. The decisions were approved by the IOA Executive Council and unanimously endorsed by the General House during its annual meeting in Ahmedabad.

What The New Initiative Covers

The National Olympic Education and Development Programme is designed as a national framework for structured learning and development across the Olympic ecosystem. It will work with National Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations to ensure outreach from the grassroots to the elite level. The programme aims to build a stronger, more informed and values-based sporting culture.

Role Of The National Olympic Academy

The reactivated National Olympic Academy will serve as the central institution for Olympic education, research, learning and dialogue in India. It will also support athletes directly by addressing educational needs, personal development, leadership skills and awareness of the Olympic movement during their sporting careers. The Academy is expected to act as a bridge between sport, education and institutional development.

Leadership And International Linkages

PT Usha, President of the IOA, has been approved as President of the National Olympic Academy. Gagan Narang, IOA Vice President and Olympic medallist, has been named Director. The Academy will collaborate with the International Olympic Academy in Olympia to align Indian programmes with the Olympic Charter and global best practices. This includes knowledge exchange, joint programmes, research and participation in international forums.

Key Focus Areas For Indian Sport

The IOA has identified several priorities under the new framework:

  • Olympic values, education and ethics.
  • Holistic athlete development and career transition support.
  • Capacity building for coaches, officials and administrators.
  • Better governance, leadership and professionalism in sports bodies.
  • Long-term athlete development aligned with international standards.
