Silambam exponent K. Pajanivel of Puducherry has been conferred with the Padma Shri for his contribution to traditional martial arts. The honour recognises his long work in preserving, teaching, and popularising Silambam, an ancient Tamil martial art, in India and abroad. Who Is K. Pajanivel
K. Pajanivel was born on 30 January 1973 in Pooranankuppam, Puducherry. He began learning Silambam under Master Rajaram. Over several decades, he developed into a master practitioner and teacher. His work has focused on keeping the traditional art form alive through regular training and public performances.
Contribution to Silambam
Pajanivel has played a major role in promoting Silambam beyond Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. He has participated in demonstrations, competitions, and cultural events in India and overseas. His efforts have helped create awareness about Silambam as part of Tamil heritage and traditional martial practice.

- He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Martial Arts in 2023.
