Karnataka’s KWIN City Semiconductor Park

Karnataka’s KWIN City Semiconductor Park

Karnataka plans a 200-acre Semiconductor Park at KWIN City near Bengaluru, with operationalisation targeted for December 2026.

Park overview

  • Location & scale: 200-acre site within KWIN City (Knowledge, Wellbeing and Innovation City) near Bengaluru; target operational date December 2026.
  • Core activities: chip fabrication, packaging and testing (OSAT), electronics production, design-to-prototype services and certification.

Infrastructure & technical features

  • Shared utilities: common cleanrooms, bulk power, water recycling, wastewater treatment and hazardous-waste management tailored for fabs.
  • Fab vs OSAT: wafer fab (front-end fabrication of ICs on silicon wafers) and OSAT (back-end assembly, packaging and final test) form complementary functions.
  • ESDM facilities: integrated Electronics System Design and Manufacturing support including design centres, testing labs and prototyping units.

Investment and industrial linkages

  • State approvals: ~Rs 23,000 crore sanctioned for semiconductor and ESDM projects in Karnataka over two years; projected >3,500 skilled jobs.
  • Private commitments: announced investments include Lam Research (~Rs 15,901 crore), Applied Materials (~Rs 4,851 crore) and Bharat Semi Systems (~Rs 2,342 crore).
  • MSME role: Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMED Act, 2006) to supply components and services in the vendor ecosystem.

Strategic linkages

  • Location advantage: proximity to Bengaluru’s semiconductor design, software and aerospace clusters supports supply-chain and talent linkages.
  • International engagement: state-level partnerships being pursued with Luxembourg and Japan for technology and investment collaboration.

IASPOINT Booster Facts

  • Fab: wafer fabrication facility producing patterned silicon wafers; requires class-controlled cleanrooms and high stable power.
  • OSAT: Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test, essential for back-end manufacturing and cost-efficient packaging.
  • India Semiconductor Mission: central implementation agency for the Semicon India Programme under DPIIT for incentives and industry facilitation.
