Kerala Declares Bacillus subtilis State Microbe

Kerala Declares Bacillus subtilis State Microbe

Kerala has become the first state of India to officially declare a state microbe, choosing the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The announcement was made at the inauguration of the Centre of Excellence in Microbiome (CoEM) in Thiruvananthapuram. The move marks the growing policy focus on microbiome research, sustainability and public health.

State Microbe Recognition

Kerala’s selection of Bacillus subtilis is because it is a naturally occurring bacterium found in soil, water, the human gut and fermented foods. A government-appointed committee of researchers, doctors and professors identified it after detailed discussions. The decision gives official recognition to a microbe with wide scientific and practical value.

Why Bacillus subtilis Matters

  • It is used in agriculture as a bio-fertiliser and biocontrol agent.
  • It supports crop yield and helps reduce plant diseases.
  • It is used in industry for enzyme production.
  • It contributes to wastewater treatment and environmental purification.
  • It also functions as a probiotic for human and animal health.

Centre of Excellence in Microbiome

The CoEM will study how microorganisms affect health, nutrition, agriculture, fisheries and the environment. It aims to connect research across humans, animals, plants, aquatic systems and environmental media. The centre is designed to translate microbiome science into practical applications rather than keeping research in separate silos.

Research, Startups and AI Use

The centre has two specialised wings. One focuses on interdisciplinary research and product development. The other uses big data and artificial intelligence for spatio-temporal mapping of microbiome data. It is also supporting two startups, one working on soil microbiomes and another on microbes from fermented foods and biodegradable waste.
