The Government of India appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on 9 May 2026. He will officially assume office on 30 May 2026, succeeding General Anil Chauhan upon the completion of his tenure. In addition to serving as the top military commander of the country, Lieutenant General Subramani will also function as the Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs. Genesis and Background

The proposal for a single-point military adviser was originally conceptualized by the Kargil Review Committee in 1999. Following this, a Group of Ministers formally proposed the position in 2001. In 2012, the Naresh Chandra Committee recommended creating a Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The final framework was created based on the recommendations of the expert committee led by Lieutenant General D B Shekatkar. The creation of the post was officially announced on 15 August 2019, and the first CDS took charge on 1 January 2020.

  • Maximum Tenure Limit: The government can extend the service of the Chief of Defence Staff up to a maximum age ceiling of 65 years.
