Mission Khapli: Emmer Wheat Farmers’ Initiative

Mission Khapli is a collective initiative supporting farmers in Karnataka’s Krishna River basin to secure better prices for Emmer wheat, also known as khapli. As of April 2026, farmers in Jamkhandi, Bagalkot district, are organising to sell processed agricultural produce derived from Emmer wheat. The mission focuses on enabling Emmer wheat growers to market processed products, moving beyond the crop’s traditional role as subsistence food.

Emmer Wheat (Khapli) Characteristics

Emmer wheat is an ancient grain cultivated primarily in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. It thrives under organic, rain-fed, and traditional farming conditions. The grain is known for its nutritional benefits, including lower gluten content, high dietary fibre, antioxidants, and easily digestible protein. These properties make it suitable for diabetic-friendly diets. Emmer wheat is increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers and is used in traditional dishes such as upma and Kesari Bath.

Geographical and Agricultural Context

Khapli wheat cultivation in Karnataka is concentrated in districts like Bidar, Raichur, Kalaburagi, and Bagalkot. The Krishna River basin provides a conducive environment for its growth under rain-fed conditions. Jamkhandi Agro Industries in Bagalkot is a noted manufacturer of Emmer Long Wheat, indicating the presence of local processing infrastructure.

Organisational and Leadership Aspects

The initiative is mentored by G. N. Gopikrishna, an activist based in Belagavi. The collective approach aims to empower farmers by organising production and marketing efforts to enhance income through value addition.
