Mizoram Reed Snake Species Discovered

Mizoram Reed Snake Species Discovered

A new species of reed snake has been identified in Mizoram and named Calamaria mizoramensis. The non-venomous snake was formally described by a research team led by zoologist HT Lalremsanga of Mizoram University. The discovery adds to India’s rich herpetofaunal diversity and marks the ecological importance of the north-eastern hill state.

Discovery and Naming

The species has been named after Mizoram, where it was first recorded and later studied in detail. Researchers confirmed that it belongs to the genus Calamaria, a group of small, secretive reed snakes found across Asia. The genus now includes 69 recognised species globally.

Research and Identification

The specimen was first noticed in 2008 on the Mizoram University campus and later found in other parts of the state. The team examined samples collected over more than a decade from forested areas around Aizawl, Reiek, Sihphir, Sawleng, Mamit and Kolasib. Genetic analysis showed more than 15 per cent divergence from its closest known relatives, supporting its recognition as a new species.

Habitat and Biological Features

The snake is nocturnal and semi-fossorial, meaning it lives partly underground. It inhabits humid forested hills at elevations between 670 and 1,295 metres above sea level. The species has also been found near human settlements, including the Mizoram University campus. It is non-venomous and poses no threat to humans.

Significance for Mizoram Biodiversity

The study also updated Mizoram’s herpetofauna checklist to 169 species, including 52 amphibians and 117 reptiles. This underlines the state’s high biodiversity and the need for continued field surveys and conservation research. The species is currently confirmed only from Mizoram, though its presence in adjoining states and parts of Bangladesh remains possible.
