A massive forest fire has swept through large areas of Mulugu district in Telangana, damaging vegetation and raising concerns for wildlife in the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary. The fire was reported in the Tadvai and Eturnagaram ranges. Forest officials have said the district has about 2.9 lakh hectares of forest cover, the highest in the state. A satellite-based Fire Alert System is being used to locate fire points inside forest areas.
Fire Spread and Affected Area
The blaze has engulfed hundreds of hectares of forest land. It has caused severe loss of greenery in a region known for rich biodiversity. The sanctuary area is important for wildlife movement and habitat protection. Forest fires in such areas can damage nests, soil cover and food sources for animals.
Suspected Cause of Fires
Officials believe the fires were set deliberately. The alleged motive is linked to the collection of tendu leaves and Madhuca longifolia, which is used in arrack preparation. Fresh growth after burning can make leaf collection easier in the next season. Forest staff have warned that such practices are harmful to forest ecosystems and wildlife.
Preventive Measures and Response
Forest officials have held meetings with contractors, tribals and non-tribals to stop fire-setting activities. They have also prohibited carrying fire-producing items inside forest areas. Ten quick response teams, each with 10 fire watchers, have been deployed. Staff have been instructed to use drones and other technology to detect fires in deep forest areas.
Importance of Fire Monitoring
The incident marks the need for early detection systems in forest management. Satellite alerts, drones and field patrols help in quick response. Such measures are important for protecting wildlife sanctuaries, reducing ecological damage and preventing repeated seasonal forest fires.
