New Bee Species Found in Arunachal

New Bee Species Found in Arunachal

On 11 July 2026 researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) published descriptions of two new solitary bee species from Arunachal Pradesh in the European Journal of Taxonomy.

New species

  • Elaphropoda triangulata: Named for triangular markings; genus Elaphropoda has 13 species worldwide; known from a single male specimen.
  • Habropoda adi: Named for the Adi community; genus Habropoda has 55 species worldwide; known from a single male specimen.
  • Publication & expedition: Descriptions published in European Journal of Taxonomy from specimens collected during the Siang Expedition.

Taxonomy & ecology

  • Family and subfamily: Both placed in family Apidae and subfamily Anthophorinae.
  • Life history: Solitary, ground‑nesting pollinators typical of many Anthophorinae taxa.
  • Specimen basis: Formal descriptions are based on holotype specimens; each species currently represented by a single male holotype.

Biogeography & conservation context

  • Region: Arunachal Pradesh lies in the Eastern Himalayas and the Indo‑Burma biodiversity hotspot.
  • Threats recorded: Infrastructure expansion and land‑use change are cited pressures on montane and forest habitats of the region.
  • Related find: Ceratinatawangensis, another solitary bee, was described from Tawang (4 Feb 2026) by the Zoological Survey of India.

IASPOINT Booster Facts

  • Taxonomic practice: New species names and diagnoses require publication in a recognised scientific outlet and designation of type specimens.
  • European Journal of Taxonomy: Peer‑reviewed journal specialising in species descriptions and taxonomic revisions.
  • Biodiversity mapping: Eastern Himalayas noted for high endemism in insects and plants; targeted surveys yield frequent new species records.
