The Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education) opened applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme on 1 June 2026 to attract Indian-origin researchers working abroad to Indian institutions and national laboratories.
Scheme overview
- Objective: Recruit accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists and professionals from abroad for advanced research positions in India.
- Timeline & target: Plan to engage at least 120 scientists and researchers during 2026-27 to 2030-31.
- Application window: Fellows and Host Institutions applications opened 1 June 2026; last date 15 July 2026.
Categories & eligibility
- Categories: Young Research Fellows (early-career), Senior Research Fellows (experienced), Research Chairs (globally recognised leaders).
- Eligible applicants: Indian nationals working abroad, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) with distinguished research records.
Funding & support
- Support components: Fellowship fees, research grants and relocation assistance.
- Quantum: Research Chairs may receive funding of up to ₹14 crore.

- Thirteen areas: Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, biotechnology, healthcare & medical technology, space & defence, energy & climate change, agriculture technology, advanced materials (among others).

- Lead institutes: IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IISc Bengaluru.
