The State Food Safety Index (SFSI) serves as a benchmarking tool to gauge the performance of Indian states and Union Territories (UTs) in ensuring food safety. Developed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the index evaluates various aspects of food safety through a set of parameters. The recent release of the 3rd edition of the SFSI sheds light on the leaders in food safety across different categories of states and UTs, with Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu; Goa, Meghalaya, and Manipur; and Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and New Delhi emerging as top performers in their respective categories.

Understanding the State Food Safety Index

The SFSI is an innovative initiative by the FSSAI aimed at promoting competition and encouraging states and UTs to improve their food safety measures. 3. **Food Testing Infrastructure and Surveillance**: Evaluating the infrastructure available for testing food products is crucial. This includes the number of operational food testing laboratories and the frequency of inspections and food sample analysis.

4. **Training and Capacity Building**: This parameter assesses the efforts made towards educating and training food business operators and officials responsible for maintaining food safety standards.

5. **Consumer Empowerment**: Consumer empowerment focuses on initiatives taken to educate consumers about food safety and nutrition, helping them make informed choices.

Top Performers in the Large States Category

In the category of large states, Gujarat has been recognized as the leading state in terms of food safety, followed closely by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These states have demonstrated exceptional performance across the parameters, indicating strong food safety governance and public awareness programs.

Leaders Among Smaller States

For smaller states, Goa stands out as the front-runner in the implementation of food safety measures. Meghalaya and Manipur also showcase significant achievements in this area, reflecting their commitment to upholding high food safety standards.
