Road Accident Fatalities India

Road Accident Fatalities India

India recorded a sharp rise in road traffic fatalities in 2024, cementing its position as the country with the highest number of road crash deaths globally. Official data shows a persistent mismatch between central reporting agencies, reflecting institutional variations in data collection. The National Crime Records Bureau reported 162,500 deaths specifically due to negligence-related road accidents in 2024. Meanwhile, a parliamentary reply by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in December 2025 confirmed that total road crash fatalities reached 177,177 in 2024, averaging 485 deaths every day.

Vulnerable Road Users and Vehicle-Wise Breakdown

Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians remain the most vulnerable categories on Indian roads. Together, they accounted for 64 percent of the total 175,000 fatalities reported under specific vehicle-user classifications in 2024.

  • Two-Wheeler Riders: This category recorded the highest toll with 84,599 deaths, which constitutes 48.3 percent of the total road accident fatalities.
  • Pedestrians: Pedestrians emerged as the second-highest affected group, accounting for 25,769 deaths or 14.7 percent of the total.
  • Car Occupants: Four-wheeler occupants recorded 23,739 fatalities during the same period.

Primary Causes and Spatial Distribution of Crashes

Behavioral issues and road infrastructure categories heavily influence the severity of accidents.

Leading Causes of Crashes

Overspeeding is the single largest factor driving road fatalities in the country. In 2024, overspeeding caused 61.2 percent of all recorded crashes, resulting in more than 100,000 fatalities and injuring 283,162 individuals. Dangerous or careless driving, including improper overtaking, accounted for 26 percent of the total accidents, leading to 46,132 deaths.

Highway Vulnerability

National and State Highways are disproportionately dangerous compared to local roads. Highways accounted for 58 percent of all road accident deaths. National Highways, which form just over 2 percent of the total road network in India, witness a high concentration of high-speed, fatal collisions. State Highways contributed to 22 percent of total accidents.

Regional Trends across States

Varying levels of vehicle density, population, and law enforcement create distinct regional patterns in accident data.

  • Tamil Nadu: The state recorded the highest number of vulnerable road user fatalities in the country. It registered 11,786 two-wheeler deaths and 4,176 pedestrian deaths.
  • Uttar Pradesh: The state recorded the highest absolute volume of fatalities linked strictly to driver and commuter negligence, accounting for 25,158 deaths.

Institutional Framework for Data Tracking

Two distinct central authorities compile road accident data in India, using different operational channels which often leads to numerical discrepancies.

Institutional Interventions for Road Safety

The government addresses the crisis through a structural approach known as the 4Es of Road Safety.

  • Education: Public awareness campaigns, safe driving training, and community engagement programs.
  • Engineering: Improvements in vehicle safety standards and the rectification of structural road defects, commonly known as black spots.
  • Enforcement: Implementation of stricter penalties under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, alongside automated speed and traffic camera networks.
  • Emergency Care: Integration of real-time accident reporting via the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) portal to ensure medical attention within the golden hour.

IASPOINT Booster Facts for UPSC

  • Global Standing: According to World Road Statistics, India ranks first in global road accident fatalities, followed by China and the United States.
  • Fatality Rate Comparison: India records a road crash fatality rate of 11.89 per lakh population. In comparison, China records 4.3 per lakh and the United States records 12.76 per lakh.
  • International Commitments: India is a signatory to the Stockholm Declaration on Road Safety (2020), which sets a global target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030.
  • Data Discrepancies: The variation between MoRTH and NCRB figures occurs because MoRTH captures comprehensive crash parameters, whereas NCRB compiles data strictly based on police FIRs categorized under section-based negligence. Delayed deaths in hospitals (occurring 30 days post-accident) also cause variations.
