WaSH Warriors Honoured Under Jal Jeevan Mission

WaSH Warriors Honoured Under Jal Jeevan Mission

The Ministry of Jal Shakti held a Samvad Samaroh and recognition programme in New Delhi to honour WaSH Warriors for grassroots leadership in water conservation and sanitation. The event recognised community-led efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), with 58 nominated representatives from States and Union Territories attending as Special Guests at the Republic Day Parade on 26 January 2026.

Recognition of Grassroots Leadership

The WaSH Warriors were selected from Swachh Sujal Gaon villages. These include rural households, SC and ST-majority villages, poor and marginalised communities, and vulnerable tribal groups. A Swachh Sujal Gaon is a village certified as Har Ghar Jal under Jal Jeevan Mission and verified as ODF Plus Model under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen). Their work reflects Jan Bhagidari, community ownership, and inclusive service delivery.

Community Impact of Tap Water Supply

Several participants shared how tap water access has changed daily life in rural areas.

  • In Chhattisgarh, a WaSH Warrior described how household tap water reduced hardship and improved women’s well-being.
  • In Gujarat, model wells and community systems were brought into light as examples of sustainable water supply.
  • In Nagaland and Assam, speakers noted better health outcomes, reduced diarrhoea among children, and less time spent fetching water.

Ministerial Message on Water Conservation

The Union Minister for Jal Shakti urged the awardees to continue innovation in water management and sanitation. He stressed that Swachhata is a way of life and a shared responsibility. He also brought into light the wider social impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission, including reduced burden on women and improved safety through household tap connections.

Broader Significance for Rural Development

The programme also promoted youth engagement through awareness campaigns on water conservation. A booklet titled Peyjal – Jan Shakti Ki Abhivyakti – Volume II was shared to document the stories of the WaSH Warriors. The initiative underlined the role of rural communities in sustaining drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene gains across India.
