Mir Alam Tank Bridge Workers Rescued

Mir Alam Tank Bridge Workers Rescued

A midnight rescue operation was carried out at Mir Alam tank in Hyderabad after nine workers and engineers were stranded on a boat due to engine failure. The group was returning after preliminary survey work for a proposed bridge project when the boat could not restart in the evening. Dense water hyacinth, darkness and the risk of crocodile sightings in nearby areas made the situation more dangerous.

Rescue Operation at Mir Alam Tank

The stranded team included soil-testing experts and labourers engaged in bridge-related survey work. After the boat malfunctioned, they alerted emergency services by dialling 100. The rescue was carried out by the Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency, with the Disaster Response Force team reaching the location and evacuating all nine persons in two trips.

Challenges Faced During the Incident

The rescue team had to navigate thick aquatic vegetation that restricted movement on the lake. Cell phone signals and flashlights were used to maintain contact and guide the operation. Continuous communication helped prevent panic among the stranded workers until they were safely brought ashore.

Bridge Project Details

The workers were carrying out surveys for a ₹319.24 crore bridge project connecting Shastripuram and Chintalmet in southern Hyderabad. The project has been contracted to KNR Constructions. It is intended to ease traffic congestion near Zoo Park and Aramghar. The planned construction period is 24 months.

Significance for Urban Infrastructure

The incident marks the risks involved in preliminary fieldwork for large infrastructure projects in waterlogged or ecologically dense areas. It also underlines the role of disaster response agencies in ensuring safety during emergency situations linked to urban development works.
