New Cockroach Species Found in Deccan Peninsula

Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India have identified a new cockroach species, Neoloboptera peninsularis, from the Deccan Peninsula in Pune district, Maharashtra. The specimen was collected near farmland in Nathachiwadi, among palm shrubs and dry leaf litter. The discovery is notable because it is the first cockroach species in India to be identified using modern DNA technology. It is also only the third recorded Indian member of the genus Neoloboptera.

Discovery and Location

The insect was found in a habitat with dense leaf litter, where cockroaches are difficult to spot because of their speed and camouflage. Researchers collected the specimens manually and preserved them in 70 per cent ethanol for further study. The species name, peninsularis, refers to Peninsular India, its native region.

Scientific Identification

The species was confirmed through a combination of morphological examination and DNA sequencing. Scientists compared the specimen with globally known Neoloboptera species and concluded that it did not match any previously described form. This made it suitable for classification as a new species. The study was published in the Records of the Zoological Survey of India.

Key Features of the Species

The new cockroach has a glossy yellowish-brown body and fully developed wings. Distinctive traits include:

  • Asymmetrical cerci at the rear.
  • A uniquely structured male genital component.
  • Differences in the subgenital plate and setae pattern.

These features distinguish it from N. chakrabortyi, the closest Indian relative.

Importance for Biodiversity Research

The finding suggests that the Deccan Peninsula may hold more undocumented insect diversity. Researchers noted that targeted field surveys and genetic sampling are needed to identify additional hidden species. The molecular data from this study will also support DNA barcoding and improve future species identification in India.
