Earth Hour was marked in Gwalior and across India with awareness and outreach activities led by WWF-India in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The observance brought into light the 20th anniversary of the global environmental movement and called on citizens to Give an Hour for Earth through practical action on sustainability, energy conservation and climate responsibility.
Awareness Activities in Gwalior
WWF-India organised an exhibition and awareness campaign at The Scindia School, Gwalior, to engage students on sustainable lifestyles and environmental responsibility. The programme was also held at the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, Gwalior, with participation from trainees under the Green Skill Development Programme.
Symbolic Switch-Off for Climate Action
A key feature of the observance was the one-hour switch-off of lights from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The gesture was used to reinforce the message of energy conservation and collective climate action. Students and participants from more than 15 States and Union Territories joined the nationwide observance and promoted responsible energy use.
Earth Hour and Mission LiFE
Earth Hour, first launched in 2007, has grown into a global movement spanning more than 190 countries. In India, the campaign now goes beyond a symbolic switch-off and encourages activities such as clean-up drives, tree plantation, biodiversity walks, cycling campaigns and sustainability workshops. The initiative aligns with Mission LiFE, which promotes lifestyle changes for environmental protection and reduced consumption.
Role of Youth and Capacity Building
The programme underlined the importance of youth participation in environmental conservation. The Green Skill Development Programme trainees were encouraged to act as local ambassadors for sustainable practices. The observance also reflected the growing role of awareness, capacity building and community engagement in Indiaβs environmental response.
