A female sloth bear with a GPS radio collar was captured by Karnataka Forest Department officials after it moved through villages near Shivamogga airport and created a potential human-wildlife conflict situation. The animal, estimated to be around eight years old, was first noticed in the Lakkavalli range in Tarikere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district before being traced near Doddabeedu in the Bhadravathi division.
Movement Across Forest Ranges
The bear’s movement was tracked by field officers from the Bhadra Wildlife Range and the Lakkavalli Range. Officials initially believed it had returned to forest cover, but it later reappeared near human habitations. Alerts were issued to local residents to avoid confrontation with the animal.
Entry Into Shivamogga Airport Area
The bear entered the premises of Shivamogga airport after climbing the compound wall. It then moved towards a school in Kachinakatte village. Forest staff maintained close watch on its movement to prevent panic and reduce the risk of injury to people and the animal.
Tranquillisation and Rehabilitation
Veterinarian Murali Manohar reached the spot and tranquillised the bear with a dart. Once sedated, the animal was secured with a net and shifted to the rehabilitation centre at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga. Forest officials said it may later be moved to a zoo after consultation with senior authorities.
GPS Collar and Wildlife Tracking
Officials noted that the GPS collar was likely fitted for a research study. The department has not yet identified the agency responsible for placing the device. The collar may help determine the bear’s earlier route and the reason for its movement towards Shivamogga.
