PM Modi Launches Rs 4,000 Crore Sikkim Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sikkim on 27-28 April 2026 and took part in the closing ceremony of the Statehood golden jubilee celebrations. On 28 April 2026, he inaugurated, launched and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore across Sikkim.

Project Sectors In Sikkim

  • The projects cover healthcare, education, connectivity, power, urban development, environment, tourism and agriculture.
  • The foundation stone was laid for a 100-bedded Ayurveda hospital at Yangang.
  • A 30-bedded Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali was inaugurated.
  • The permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang was inaugurated.
  • Facilities at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence and Helen Lepcha Medical College were also inaugurated.

Connectivity And Public Infrastructure

  • The foundation stone was laid for two steel arch bridges over the Teesta river.
  • An upgraded road connecting Birdhang to Namchi was inaugurated.
  • Teesta is a major river of Sikkim and flows through the eastern Himalayas before entering Bangladesh.

The term “Ashtalakshmi” refers to eight forms of prosperity in Hindu tradition. In Indian public discourse, the Northeast region has been described as India’s Ashtalakshmi in relation to its cultural and economic potential.

Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024

The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024 was a three-day cultural festival held in New Delhi from 6 to 8 December 2024. The festival presented the heritage of the eight Northeastern states of India.
