The IndiaAI Mission unveiled Varya, India’s first indigenous, distilled AI video generation model. Developed by Bengaluru-based startup Avataar.ai under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the model is designed to provide affordable, culturally accurate visual media generation at a population scale.
Architectural Framework and Efficiency
- Distillation Technology: Varya is a compressed derivative of the global Wan 2.2 model. It uses model distillation to reduce computational requirements from over 50 iterative denoising steps to just 4.
- Operational Speed: It creates a five-second 720p video in ~45 seconds on standard hardware, whereas the base model requires ~1,230 seconds.
- Cost Effectiveness: By optimizing inference, Varya reduces generation costs to approximately ₹0.48 per second, making it up to 10x more cost-efficient than standard global models.
Cultural and Functional Significance
- Dataset Training: Trained on 40,000 curated Indian cultural datasets, it ensures accurate representation of regional attire, festivals, architecture, and culinary diversity, avoiding the Eurocentric biases of global models.
- Utility: Available via text-to-video and image-to-video prompts, it supports MSME marketing, educational content creation, and government policy dissemination.
