All-India Tiger Estimation 2026 Begins in Tamil Nadu

The first phase of the All-India Tiger Estimation-2026 (AITE-26) has begun in the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary under the Erode Forest Division in Tamil Nadu. The exercise is part of the nationwide tiger census and covers wildlife, herbivores, scavenging birds, and forest vegetation. Forest staff were trained in enumeration methods before fieldwork started across four ranges – Anthiyur, Bargur, Chennampatti and Thattakarai.

Survey Coverage and Deployment

More than 150 forest department staff have been deployed for the exercise. They have been divided into teams to cover 52 forest patrol beats. The survey is not limited to tiger reserves alone. Forest divisions with the presence of co-predators and other carnivores are also included in the estimation process.

Method Used in First Phase

During the first three days, the census is being conducted through the line transect method. Field teams record pugmarks, animal droppings and direct sightings. Species being enumerated include tigers, leopards, gaur, elephants and bears. This method helps assess animal presence and distribution across forest areas.

Later Assessment and Data Submission

In the next three days, large herbivores such as elephants, gaur and deer will be counted. The survey also includes scavenging birds like vultures. In addition, teams are documenting tree species, grasses, weeds, shrubs and undergrowth to assess habitat conditions. The field survey is scheduled to conclude on January 12. The collected data will be compiled and submitted to the National Tiger Conservation Authority by January 31, while the final report is expected in 2027.
