Aviation MRO Ecosystem in India

Aviation MRO Ecosystem in India

On 28 July 2026 GMR Aero Technic signed a licence agreement with Honeywell Aerospace to provide MRO for seven Honeywell Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) fitted on CFM International LEAP engines at its Hyderabad facility.

The MRO Activity

  • MRO definition: Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul covers inspection, repair, restoration and functional testing of aircraft, engines and components.
  • Service categories: Line maintenance, base/depot maintenance, component MRO and engine shop/overhaul.
  • Depot-level maintenance: Deep repairs at specialised facilities requiring certified tooling, test benches and shop-capabilities.

LEAP Engines and LRUs

  • LEAP engine: Turbofan family by CFM International (GE–Safran JV); installed on Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX variants.
  • Line Replaceable Unit (LRU): Modular component designed for quick removal and replacement; often governed by life-limits and shop-repair procedures.
  • LRU repair licensing: OEM licences grant access to repair data, genuine parts and authorised overhaul procedures for third-party MROs.

Regulation and Approvals

  • Indian regulator: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) certifies MRO organisations and issues approvals.
  • International approvals: EASA and FAA approvals are commonly required for components certificated under their jurisdictions.
  • Quality norms: Repairs must follow approved data, traceability, calibration and certified personnel requirements.

Exam-relevant Facts

  • GMR Aero Technic: Aviation engineering facility located in Hyderabad, a key Indian MRO centre.
  • Honeywell Aerospace: Division supplying avionics, auxiliary power units, environmental systems and component programmes.
  • MRO classification: Component MRO is distinct from airframe and engine overhaul and affects fleet availability and turnaround time.
