Bargi Dam Safety Notice Issued by NDSA

Bargi Dam Safety Notice Issued by NDSA

The National Dam Safety Authority has issued a show-cause notice to the Narmada Valley Development Authority over serious safety lapses at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The notice cites non-compliance with the Dam Safety Act, 2021 and flags risks to public safety, downstream settlements and critical infrastructure management.

Key Safety Concerns

The inspection found persistent heavy leakage from the dam’s masonry spillway gallery. This issue had earlier been flagged by the Central Water Commission and has reportedly remained unresolved for years. The Authority said prolonged leakage can weaken structural strength, increase foundation pressure and raise the risk of failure.

Deficiencies in Monitoring and Security

The joint inspection team also found that the dam lacks an adequate instrumentation system. Such systems are needed to monitor seepage, stress and structural health in a scientific manner. The report further noted weak access control in sensitive areas, including the gallery, allowing unauthorised movement and creating security risks.

Legal and Regulatory Action

The NDSA has asked the NVDA’s Member (Engineering) to explain the lapses within 30 days. It warned that if mandatory safety provisions continue to be ignored, action may follow under Sections 41 and 42 of the Dam Safety Act, 2021. These provisions include penalties for responsible officials in cases of persistent non-compliance.

Importance of Bargi Dam

Bargi Dam is a major multi-purpose dam on the Narmada river. It supports irrigation, water supply and power generation, and is vital for Jabalpur and nearby districts. The notice has renewed attention on dam safety standards, especially for older dams that require regular assessment, repairs and emergency preparedness.
