The 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path brought into light India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence capability, operational mobility and future-ready force structures. The first public appearance of the Bhairav light commando battalion and the debut of the Universal Rocket Launcher System (URLS) ‘Suryastra’ were among the key military marks of the parade.
Bhairav Light Commando Battalion
The 4 BHAIRAV Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment was raised in October 2025. It has been designed to bridge the gap between regular infantry and special forces. The unit is intended for swift, agile and high-intensity combat missions. Its debut reflected a shift towards more flexible and responsive battlefield formations.
Suryastra Rocket Launcher System
Suryastra was showcased as India’s first indigenous universal multi-calibre long-range rocket launcher system. It is built for precision surface-to-surface strikes at ranges of 150 km and 300 km. Unlike conventional rocket artillery, it can integrate multiple rocket and missile variants on a single platform. This gives the armed forces greater operational flexibility in varied combat situations.
Other Parade Highlights
A mixed scouts contingent in heavy thermal combat gear also made its maiden appearance. It was led by Lieutenant Amit Choudhary of the 2 Arunachal Scouts. The contingent symbolised India’s elite frontier reconnaissance units. The mounted contingent of the 61 Cavalry appeared in battle gear under a phased battle array formation. This formation mirrored battlefield movement, beginning with reconnaissance elements and followed by logistics and combat platforms. The 61 Cavalry, traditionally known for ceremonial parade duties, appeared in combat attire for the first time. The celebrations began with a cultural performance by 100 artists under the theme Vishwaguru Bharat – Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the National Flag and led the nation in the ceremonial observance. The 21-gun salute was fired using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended as Chief Guests.
