Bihar Declared Free of Naxal Activities

Bihar has been declared free of Naxal activities after the surrender of the last armed Maoist, Suresh Koda, in Munger. With this development, no armed Naxalite squad remains active in any of the 23 districts that were once affected by Left Wing Extremism in the state. The milestone marks a major shift from the period when central Bihar was among the most troubled regions in the country.

Last Armed Maoist Surrenders

Suresh Koda, identified as the last armed Maoist in Bihar, surrendered in Munger. His surrender completed the process of eliminating active armed Naxalite presence from the state. Authorities have linked this outcome to sustained security operations and rehabilitation measures.

Government Rehabilitation Support

Under the Central Government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, Suresh Koda is set to receive the prescribed benefits. Such policies are designed to encourage surrender, support reintegration, and reduce the appeal of armed extremism. The family of the surrendered Maoist has also welcomed the decision.

Decline of Naxalism in Bihar

Bihar had 23 Naxal-affected districts in 2012. During the 1970s, Naxalite influence expanded , especially in central Bihar. Recently, no Naxalite incident was reported in the state. During the same year, 220 Naxalites were arrested, reflecting intensified counter-insurgency efforts and improved ground control.

Significance for Security and Development

The declaration is important for internal security, governance, and development in Bihar. The absence of active Naxalite squads is expected to improve law and order, strengthen public confidence, and support infrastructure and welfare delivery in previously affected areas.
