Bihar Government Wins Trust Vote

On 24 April 2026, the NDA government in Bihar, led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, won a trust vote in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The motion was passed by voice vote in a one-day special session of the 243-member House.

Trust Vote In State Legislature

A trust vote is a floor test used to establish whether a council of ministers has the support of the majority of members in a legislative assembly. In a state assembly, the Chief Minister and the council of ministers remain in office while they retain majority support under Article 164 of the Constitution of India.

Bihar Legislative Assembly

The Bihar Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of Bihar. It has 243 elected members, and a simple majority requires 122 seats. The BJP-led NDA coalition holds 202 seats in the present Assembly.

Chief Minister And Council Of Ministers

Samrat Choudhary moved the trust motion in the House and proposed that the Assembly repose its trust in the current council of ministers. He became the first BJP leader to head a government in Bihar after Nitish Kumar resigned as Chief Minister in April 2026.

Nitish Kumar resigned as Chief Minister in April 2026 after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition, stated in the Assembly that five governments had been formed in Bihar over the last five years.
