CFTRI BioNEST Incubation Centre Inaugurated

CFTRI BioNEST Incubation Centre Inaugurated

The BIRAC-BioNEST Incubation Centre at the Central Food Technology and Research Institute (CFTRI) has been inaugurated to strengthen India’s food innovation ecosystem. The facility is designed to connect laboratory research with commercial applications through incubation support, shared infrastructure, scale-up validation and regulatory facilitation. It aims to help food startups and biotechnology ventures convert scientific ideas into market-ready products.

Lab-to-Market Innovation Platform

The new centre provides dedicated incubation suites and common facilities for entrepreneurs working in food bioprocessing and biotechnology. It is expected to support research translation, product development and commercialisation. The exhibition held alongside the inauguration showcased startup-driven technologies, processed food products and in-house innovations developed at CFTRI.

Startup Support and Commercial Outcomes

As of March 2026, the BioNEST facility has supported 26 startups, including physical incubates, hybrid incubates and graduated ventures. Several of these have already achieved product commercialisation. The incubated firms have filed 12 patents and contributed to research publications, indicating a growing link between innovation and market outcomes.

Emerging Technology Areas

The startups associated with the centre are active in high-value segments such as:

  • Nutraceuticals
  • Precision fermentation
  • Probiotics and postbiotics
  • CRISPR-based technologies
  • Botanicals

These areas reflect a shift towards science-driven and specialised products in the food and biotechnology sectors.

Institutional Collaboration and Legacy

The event also saw the signing of four Memoranda of About and the launch of two CFTRI-developed products. Officials brought into light the importance of industry linkage, MSME participation and private sector engagement in scaling innovation. Marking CFTRI’s 75th year, publications and commemorative items were released to document its research legacy. The institute has developed and transferred over 450 technologies to thousands of licensees, making it a major national hub for food research and enterprise development.
