The National Statistics Office has released the annual publication Energy Statistics India 2026, a comprehensive dataset on India’s energy sector. The publication covers reserves, capacity, production, consumption, and import-export trends across major energy commodities, including coal, lignite, petroleum, natural gas, and renewable energy. It also presents energy balance tables, Sankey diagrams, and sustainable energy indicators aligned with international standards.
Expanded Coverage and Data Harmonisation
The 33rd edition has widened its scope by adding new areas such as credit flow to domestic energy sectors and world energy statistics. It has also addressed key data gaps by incorporating:
- Consumption of domestic coal through e-auction.
- Imported non-coking coal consumption.
- Sub-sectoral electricity use in industry using Annual Survey of Industries data.
- Industry-wise distribution of HSD through retail and reseller channels.
- International aviation and marine bunker data.
The publication has also standardised end-use sectors across energy commodities to improve comparability.
Primary Energy Supply and Renewable Potential
India’s Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) grew by 2.95% in FY 2024-25 to 9,32,816 KToE. The country’s renewable energy generation potential stood at 47,04,043 MW as on 31 March 2025. Solar energy accounted for the largest share, with a sharp rise in estimated potential to 33,43,378 MW. Wind power and large hydro followed with 11,63,856 MW and 1,33,410 MW respectively.
Renewable Capacity and Power Generation Growth
Installed renewable electricity capacity, including utility and non-utility sources, rose from 90,134 MW in 2015-16 to 2,29,346 MW in 2024-25. Gross renewable electricity generation increased from 1,89,314 GWh to 4,16,823 GWh over the same period. Transmission and distribution losses also improved, falling from around 22% to about 17%.
Energy Consumption, Coal Dominance and Credit Flow
Coal remained the dominant energy source, with supply rising from 3,87,761 KToE in 2015-16 to 5,52,315 KToE in 2024-25. Total Final Consumption increased by over 30% to 6,08,578 KToE. Per capita energy consumption rose from 15,296 MJ/person to 18,096 MJ/person. Credit flow to the energy sector also expanded sharply, increasing from ₹1,688 crore in 2021 to ₹10,325 crore in 2025.
