Fast Breeder Reactor Programme in India

Fast Breeder Reactor Programme in India

On 19 June 2026 BHAVINI held an Industry Partnership Conclave in Mahabalipuram/Chennai to plan expansion of India’s Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) programme.

Event and Immediate Context

  • Conclave: BHAVINI organised the Industry Partnership Conclave for FBR Expansion on 19 June 2026.
  • Participants: Public and private sector industries, technology partners, equipment manufacturers and engineering organisations.
  • Key challenges discussed: Scaling up FBR deployment, creating manufacturing capacity, domestic production of critical components, and strengthening quality assurance across the supply chain.

Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR)

  • Location & capacity: 500 MWe PFBR at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.
  • First criticality: Achieved on 6 April 2026 at 20:25 IST, initiating a sustained chain reaction.
  • Design & agencies: Indigenously designed and built by BHAVINI with R&D by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR).
  • Global position: India is the second country after Russia to operate a commercial fast breeder reactor.

Technical and Programme Facts

  • Reactor type: Fast breeder reactors use fast neutrons and typically liquid sodium coolant to breed fissile material from fertile isotopes.
  • Fuel cycle role: Entry into the second stage of India’s three-stage nuclear power programme to produce plutonium for subsequent thorium utilisation.
  • Fuel form: PFBR employs mixed oxide (MOX) fuel.

IASPOINT Booster Facts

  • Organisational placement: BHAVINI is a central public sector enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
  • Three-stage outline: Stage I—PHWR/LWRs; Stage II—fast breeder reactors (plutonium); Stage III—thorium‑U233 reactors.
  • Material considerations: Sodium coolant handling and manufacturing of high‑integrity components are critical for FBR scale-up.
