ICMR Licenses Indigenous Biomedical Technologies

On 21 July 2026 the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) licensed three indigenous biomedical technologies for commercialisation under its Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative.

Medical Innovations Patent Mitra

  • Purpose: Technology transfer and commercialisation route for publicly funded biomedical research; links national institutes with industry for product development and licensing.
  • Administrative link: ICMR functions under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Technologies Licensed (21 July 2026)

  • SHetA2 (anti‑HPV therapeutic): Candidate for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN); licensed to Emcure Pharmaceuticals for development and commercial use.
  • Fusion‑protein typhoid vaccine: Targets Salmonella typhi; developed at ICMR‑NIRBI, Kolkata; licensed to Biological E Ltd.
  • Recombinant multivalent enteric vaccine: Designed for protection against S. typhi, S. paratyphi and Shigella spp.; licensed to Biological E Ltd.

  • CIN grading: CIN 1, CIN 2, CIN 3 denote increasing levels of cervical epithelial dysplasia used to guide management.
  • Vaccine platforms: Fusion‑protein vaccines combine antigenic domains; recombinant vaccines use engineered antigens to broaden serovar coverage.
