India reiterated support for a two-state solution for Palestine during a BRICS meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers and Special Envoys on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in New Delhi, which ended on 26 April 2026. The meeting did not produce a collective document because BRICS members did not reach consensus on the West Asia conflict.
BRICS And West Asia
BRICS is a grouping of major emerging economies that conducts summit-level and ministerial consultations on global political and economic issues. In April 2026, BRICS discussions covered Palestine, Gaza, humanitarian aid, the role of UNRWA, terrorism, and attacks on UNIFIL.
- India held the BRICS chair in 2026 and issued a chair’s statement at the end of the New Delhi meeting.
- India stated support for a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.
- India’s position on Palestine remained aligned with an agreed position reached with the Arab League, including Palestine, in January 2026.
Two-State Solution
The two-state solution is a diplomatic framework that seeks the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. The 1967 borders refer to the lines before the Six-Day War, and they are used in many international discussions on the Israel-Palestine dispute.
- At the BRICS Rio Summit in July 2025, the bloc called for a two-state solution and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
- Iran opposed the two-state solution during the July 2025 BRICS discussions.
Humanitarian Assistance To Gaza
India has provided humanitarian assistance to Gaza through medicines, medical supplies, and financial support. In 2025 and 2026, India disbursed $10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
- India also sent about 70 metric tonnes of medicines and medical supplies to Gaza.
- UNRWA is the United Nations agency responsible for assistance to Palestinian refugees in the Near East.
