India has improved its position in the Henley Passport Index, moving to 75th place in the latest global ranking. The Indian passport now offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 56 countries. This marks a rise of 10 places from the previous ranking, although the number of accessible destinations has fallen by one compared with last year.
India’s Latest Passport Ranking
India is now placed 75th in the global passport list, sharing the rank with Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Madagascar, and Mauritania. The passport index is often seen as an indicator of a country’s diplomatic reach and international mobility. India’s position has improved in rank, but the travel benefit has slightly reduced in terms of the number of countries accessible without a prior visa.
Visa-Free Travel Access
- Indian passport holders can travel to 56 countries without a visa in advance.
- Travel to 170 destinations still requires a visa.
- Last year, Indian citizens had access to 57 visa-free destinations.
- The change shows that rank improvement does not always mean wider travel access.
Henley Passport Index Method
The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports against 227 travel destinations. It is based on data from the International Air Transport Association. The index measures how many destinations a passport holder can enter without obtaining a visa beforehand. It is widely used to compare passport strength across countries.
Global Passport Trends
Singapore continues to lead the index with visa-free access to 192 countries. Japan and South Korea share second place with access to 187 destinations. Sweden and the United Arab Emirates follow in third place with access to 186 countries. Among major economies, the United States is ranked tenth, while the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Canada remain in the upper tier of the list.
