TRAI Report Highlights Telecom Growth and 5G Expansion

India’s telecommunications and broadcasting sectors recorded strong expansion in 2024–25, supported by rapid 5G rollout, higher data usage, regulatory reforms and improved digital access. The annual report of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) noted that India remained the world’s second-largest telecom market, with subscriber numbers rising sharply and broadband penetration continuing to deepen across the country.

Telecom Subscriber Growth

India’s total telecom subscriber base reached 1,200.80 million by the end of March 2025. Internet subscribers stood at 969.10 million, while broadband users rose to 944.12 million. Tele-density increased to 85.04 per cent, showing near-universal access to telecom services. The growth reflected rising demand for affordable connectivity in both urban and rural areas.

Rapid 5G Rollout

5G deployment emerged as the biggest sectoral development during the year. By February 2025, 5G services were available in nearly all districts, with coverage reaching 99.6 per cent of districts. More than 4.69 lakh base transceiver stations supported the network, serving around 25 crore users. 5G, launched in India on 1 October 2022, is enabling applications in healthcare, education, manufacturing, logistics and infrastructure. It is also building the base for artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and Industry 4.0.

Regulatory Reforms and Consumer Protection

The Telecommunications Act, 2023 remained central to sectoral reforms. TRAI issued recommendations on service authorisation, spectrum sharing and leasing, terahertz spectrum usage and network authorisations. These measures aim to simplify licensing, improve spectrum efficiency and encourage innovation. TRAI also strengthened consumer protection through steps against spam calls and fraudulent messaging. A technology-neutral and light-touch regulatory approach was emphasised to support investment and competition.

Broadcasting and Media Sector

The broadcasting and cable television sector also showed steady progress. India’s media and entertainment industry reached USD 2.5 trillion in 2024 and contributed 0.73 per cent to GDP. The television segment remained strong with 918 private satellite TV channels, 845 multi-system operators and 56.92 million active pay DTH subscribers. The radio segment retained resilience with 388 private FM stations, while community radio expanded local outreach.
