India’s Drone Ecosystem Crosses Key Milestones

India’s Drone Ecosystem Crosses Key Milestones

India’s drone ecosystem has expanded rapidly, with registered drones crossing 38,500 and DGCA-certified remote pilots reaching 39,890 by February 2026. The sector now includes more than 240 approved training organisations, reflecting a shift from small pilot projects to a mainstream technology ecosystem. Drones are increasingly used in agriculture, land surveys, infrastructure monitoring, disaster assessment, and public service delivery.

Growth of the Drone Ecosystem

The ecosystem now covers manufacturers, software developers, component suppliers, service providers, training institutions, start-ups, and research organisations. These actors operate within a unified regulatory framework. The growth indicates stronger domestic capability in unmanned aerial systems and wider acceptance of drones in governance and commerce.

Use in Governance and Public Services

Drones are being deployed for multiple official functions. They support land and property mapping, monitor railways and highways, and assist in disaster assessment. Their use has improved efficiency, transparency, and precision in administrative work. The technology is also becoming important for infrastructure oversight and public service delivery.

SVAMITVA and Rural Mapping

Under the SVAMITVA Scheme, drones have surveyed 3.28 lakh villages. Property cards have been prepared for 1.82 lakh villages across 31 states, covering 2.76 crore cards in total. The scheme has strengthened rural land record management and reduced disputes by improving property documentation.

Women-Led Adoption and Manufacturing Push

The government has also promoted inclusive adoption through women self-help groups. A total of 1,094 drones have been distributed to women SHGs, including over 500 under the Namo Drone Didi initiative. This has supported farm productivity, rural livelihoods, skill development, and domestic manufacturing, while positioning India for greater self-reliance in drone technology.
