Life Mission Recognised For Affordable Housing

The NITI Aayog has recognised Kerala’s Life Mission as a best practice in affordable housing. The mission has been described as a multi-faceted convergence and community-based model that links housing with livelihood, health and skill support. The recognition comes in a wider framework on affordable housing and marks implementation models connected with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U).

Life Mission Model

Life Mission was launched in 2016 as a comprehensive housing initiative to reduce the housing crisis. It aims to provide homes while also supporting social and economic inclusion. The model brings together multiple departments and community institutions to improve delivery and long-term sustainability.

Key Features Of The Initiative

  • Housing is integrated with livelihood support.
  • Health and skill support are linked to beneficiaries.
  • Community participation is central to implementation.
  • The model promotes multi-sectoral convergence.

Recognition In Affordable Housing Framework

The NITI Aayog report, titled A Comprehensive Framework to Promote Affordable Housing, lists best practices from nine state governments under PMAY-U. It notes that Life Mission has improved coverage, community empowerment and sustainable urban development. The report also marks similar initiatives from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Haryana.

Role Of Self-Help Groups

The report praises Kerala and five other states for using self-help group networks in PMAY-U implementation. Women’s groups help supervise construction quality, support geo-tagging, ensure timely release of instalments and encourage beneficiaries to complete houses on time. This community-based approach has strengthened monitoring and delivery in housing schemes.
