Wangchhu Hydro Project Begins in Bhutan

Wangchhu Hydro Project Begins in Bhutan

Bhutan has commenced the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project, marking a major step in its energy partnership with the Adani Group. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. The project is the first to be taken up under the wider 5,000 MW hydropower collaboration announced earlier between the two sides.

Project Overview

The Wangchhu hydroelectric project will generate 570 MW of power in Bhutan. It is designed as a renewable energy project with associated infrastructure. The estimated investment is around Rs 60 billion. The project is expected to be completed within five years of groundbreaking.

Ownership Structure

  • Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) will hold a 51 per cent stake.
  • Adani Group will hold a 49 per cent stake.
  • The structure gives Bhutan majority ownership in the project.

Strategic Energy Partnership

Recently, Adani Group and DGPC signed Memoranda of About to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan. The Wangchhu project is the first concrete outcome of that agreement. The partnership is aimed at expanding Bhutan’s hydropower capacity and strengthening cross-border clean energy cooperation.

Exam Relevance

The project is important for questions on renewable energy, hydropower development, public-private partnerships, and India-Bhutan economic cooperation. It also marks Bhutan’s role as a hydropower-rich Himalayan state and the growing focus on sustainable energy investment in South Asia.
