Swachh Tawi Mahotsav Begins in Jammu

Swachh Tawi Mahotsav Begins in Jammu

Jammu is hosting a three-day Swachh Tawi Mahotsav at the 4th Tawi Bridge to mark Baisakhi and promote riverfront cleanliness, local heritage and public participation. The event is being organised by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jammu Smart City Limited, in coordination with the Departments of Tourism and Information. It is part of the broader effort under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 to make Jammu cleaner and more culturally vibrant.

Festival Venue and Purpose

The Mahotsav is being held on the left bank of the Tawi riverfront, which has been opened to the public for the occasion. The festival links cultural celebration with environmental awareness. It marks the importance of preserving the Tawi River, often referred to as the Surya Putri Tawi, while encouraging citizens to support cleanliness efforts.

Events and Public Attractions

  • The festival includes Tawi Aarti and boating on the riverfront.
  • A traditional mela, Dangal, and food festival have been arranged for families.
  • Visitors can see Dogri cuisine stalls and handloom exhibits.
  • Children have dedicated play areas, along with fun rides.
  • Cultural programmes, celebrity performances and a laser show are also part of the event.

Boating Trial and Water Sports Plan

A new feature of this edition is professional boating using motorboats and rafts. Entry to the festival and cultural shows is free, while boating is priced separately for children and adults. The boating activity is being treated as a trial run before a final assessment by the National Institute of Water Sports, Goa. The findings are expected to support the development of permanent water sports facilities in the coming months.

Cleanliness Drive and Urban Management

To maintain the riverfront, JMC has increased fines for littering. The measure is intended to balance festive activity with strict urban upkeep. The Mahotsav reflects an effort to combine tourism, culture and civic discipline, while strengthening public ownership of Jammu’s riverfront and heritage spaces.
