The Indian Army has established 88.4 FM Radio Sikkim Sundari, Sikkim’s first Border Village Community Radio Station in East Sikkim. The station is designed to improve communication and information access in remote high-altitude border areas where geographic isolation, harsh weather, and weak mobile and internet connectivity often limit outreach. It aims to provide timely and reliable information to local communities and strengthen engagement in border regions.
Purpose of the Community Radio
The station will serve as a local information platform for residents in remote villages. It will broadcast:
- Local news and weather updates.
- Information on government schemes.
- Programmes on agriculture, education, and community development.
- Content that promotes regional culture and addresses community concerns.
Support for Border Communities
The initiative is intended to bridge the information gap in difficult terrain. In high-altitude areas, communication networks are often unreliable, especially during severe weather. A community radio station can help deliver essential updates quickly and in a format accessible to local people. It also supports civil-military coordination in border areas by connecting communities with administrative and developmental information.
Role of Youth and Local Participation
The station will create opportunities for local youth to participate in radio programming and community outreach. This can help develop communication skills, encourage public participation, and build a sense of ownership among residents. Such involvement may also strengthen awareness of local issues and improve community-led development efforts.
Strategic and Social Significance
The launch reflects a broader effort to improve last-mile communication in border regions. Community radio can support social inclusion, local identity, and access to public services. It may also help amplify local voices in areas where conventional media and digital access remain limited.
