The Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission) is a space probe orbiting around Mars since September 24, 2014. It is ISRO’s maiden interplanetary mission launched as a “technology demonstrator” project. Its success made India the first Asian nation to reach the Martian orbit and the first in the world to succeed in the first attempt.
The MOM spacecraft recently completed seven years in its orbit, surpassing its designed mission life of six months. It had successfully completed all its mission objectives. The mission is expected to last one more year. The mission’s long life was achieved through reconfiguration of spacecraft, fuel optimisation and other activities.
