MoSPI released two thematic Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) bulletins in Patna during a capacity building workshop on SDG monitoring, environment accounts, and gender statistics. The bulletins, titled Planet in Focus – Advancing Environmental Sustainability under the SDGs and Delivering Prosperity at Scale – India’s Economic Transformation through the SDGs, present a data-driven overview of India’s progress under the 2030 Agenda. They use the latest official figures from the Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report, 2025.
Planet Pillar and Environmental Progress
The first bulletin reviews India’s performance on environmental sustainability, with emphasis on SDG 6, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, and SDG 15. It marks priorities such as climate mitigation, adaptation, water management, biodiversity conservation, and responsible consumption.
- India has achieved universal Open Defecation Free status across all districts under Swachh Bharat Mission.
- 97.2% of schools had gender-segregated toilets in 2023–24.
- Waste recycling facilities increased from 829 in 2019–20 to 3,036 in 2024–25.
- The bulletin also notes India’s progress in disaster risk reduction in line with the Sendai Framework.
Prosperity Pillar and Economic Transformation
The second bulletin examines inclusive and sustainable economic growth through SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 10, and SDG 11. It focuses on energy transition, infrastructure expansion, employment, innovation, and urban development.
- India is the fourth-largest wind energy producer in the world.
- Renewable energy share in installed electricity capacity rose from 16.02% in 2015–16 to 22.13% in 2024–25.
- Carbon intensity of the power sector declined from 61.45 tonnes CO₂ per ₹ crore in 2015–16 to 40.52 tonnes in 2022–23.
- Household electrification reached 100% after rapid last-mile expansion.
- Mobile network coverage now exceeds 99% of the population.
- Tourism contributed 2.60% to GDP in 2022–23 and remains a major source of jobs and foreign exchange.
Significance for SDG Monitoring
The bulletins are part of a new thematic series aligned with the five pillars of the 2030 Agenda – People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships. They are designed to make SDG progress easier to understand through concise indicators, policy marks, and national achievements. The initiative strengthens evidence-based monitoring of India’s development goals and supports wider awareness of SDG implementation.
