National Productivity Council Marks 68th Foundation Day

The National Productivity Council (NPC) will celebrate its 68th Foundation Day on 12 February 2026 and observe National Productivity Week from 12 to 18 February 2026 across India. The week will focus on productivity improvement, especially in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), through cluster-based development. The theme is Clusters as Growth Engine – Maximizing Productivity in MSMEs. It reflects the wider policy emphasis on manufacturing competitiveness, sustainable industrialisation and stronger integration with global value chains.

Foundation Day and Productivity Week

NPC was established in 1958 as an autonomous society under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Its mandate is to promote productivity, efficiency and competitiveness in the Indian economy. National Productivity Week is observed annually to spread awareness on productivity-led growth and institutional best practices.

Theme and Policy Relevance

The 2026 theme marks the role of industrial clusters in raising output, lowering costs and improving market access for MSMEs. Cluster-based development helps firms share infrastructure, skills, technology and services. It is also seen as important for sustainable industrial growth and for strengthening India’s position in global supply chains.

Nationwide Activities and Outreach

NPC will organise seminars, workshops and outreach programmes through its 12 Regional Directorates located in Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Patna. Twenty-four Local Productivity Councils will also participate. Ministries, State Governments, industry bodies and academic institutions will join the awareness activities.

NPC Mandate and International Linkages

NPC provides consultancy and training in Industrial Engineering, Environmental and Energy Management, Agri-Business, Economic Services, Quality Management, Human Resources Management, Information Technology and Technology Management. It also conducts research in productivity. NPC is a constituent of the Tokyo-based Asian Productivity Organisation, an inter-governmental body where India is a founding member and the current Chair.
