Nepal’s Ministry of Forests and Environment and WWF Nepal formalised a Scope of Cooperation agreement in Kathmandu on 29 or 30 April 2026 for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. WWF Nepal has committed to mobilise up to USD 40 million over ten years, subject to funding availability, for conservation programmes and protected area support.
Scope of Cooperation
The agreement covers conservation landscapes and protected areas across Nepal. It aligns with national conservation priorities and international commitments linked to biodiversity, forests, climate change, wetlands, agriculture, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Implementation Framework
The partnership provides for joint design and implementation of projects by MoFE and WWF Nepal. The implementation network includes provincial forest ministries, division forest offices, protected area offices, buffer zone institutions, community forest management groups, and local and national non-governmental organisations.
Institutional and Technical Features
Dr. Rajendra KC serves as Chief of the Planning, Monitoring and Coordination Division at MoFE. Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung is the Country Representative of WWF Nepal. The cooperation uses science-based and community-led conservation methods in Nepal’s protected areas and conservation landscapes.
Related Biodiversity Initiative
On 31 March 2026, WWF Nepal signed a five-year project agreement with the Social Welfare Council for its Biodiversity Conservation in Nepal initiative. The initiative focuses on species, space, and people across key conservation landscapes and nationally identified priority areas.
Conservation Focus Areas
The Biodiversity Conservation in Nepal initiative covers endangered species, critical habitats, and sustainable coexistence between communities and nature. Nepal’s protected area network includes national parks, wildlife reserves, conservation areas, hunting reserves, and buffer zones.
