PM-KISAN is a central sector scheme that provides income support to eligible farmer families with cultivable landholding. The scheme transfers ₹6,000 a year in three equal instalments through Direct Benefit Transfer into Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. The latest update concerns registration rules, digital access, and grievance support for farmers under the scheme.
Scheme Coverage and Benefit Transfer
PM-KISAN was launched in February 2019 to supplement the financial needs of farmers. The benefit is given only to eligible landholding farmers, subject to exclusion criteria linked to higher economic status. Since inception, more than ₹4.09 lakh crore has been disbursed through 21 instalments.
Farmer ID and New Registration Rules
Farmer ID has been made mandatory only for new registrations in 19 States where farmer registry work has started. In States where the registry has not yet begun, farmers can still register without Farmer ID. This phased approach is intended to support the creation of a verified farmer database.
Digital Access and Grievance Support
The scheme uses a farmer-centric digital infrastructure to reduce intermediary involvement and improve transparency. To address issues such as name mismatch or land record mismatch, multiple registration modes have been enabled, including self-registration through mobile and web applications. A grievance mechanism also allows farmers to resolve registration-related problems and obtain Farmer ID.
Support for Farmers Without Mobile Phones
Farmers without mobile phones can use Common Service Centres and state government offices at block and tehsil level to access services. These facilities are meant to ensure that digital delivery does not exclude eligible beneficiaries. The system aims to widen access while maintaining verification standards.
