Sacred Piprahwa Relics Reach Ladakh

The sacred Piprahwa Relics of Buddha reached Leh, Ladakh, on 29 April 2026. The relics are linked to Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh, where they were discovered in 1898, and they include bone fragments, crystal caskets and gems.

Piprahwa Discovery

The Piprahwa site lies in present-day Uttar Pradesh near the India-Nepal border region. The relics are associated with the early Buddhist tradition and are kept in the National Museum, New Delhi, for most of the year. A collection of associated gems and offerings returned to India in July 2025. The relics have also been exhibited in several countries before the Ladakh exposition.

Exposition in Ladakh

The public exposition carries the title “Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of Tathagata: Peace Beyond Borders”. It is scheduled from 1 May to 15 May 2026 and coincides with the 2569th Buddha Purnima. Public veneration will take place at Jivetsal in Leh from 2 May to 10 May. The exposition will then move to Zanskar on 11 May and 12 May, and to the Dharma Centre in Leh on 13 May and 14 May.

Transport and Organisation

The relics were brought from Delhi in a special Indian Air Force aircraft. Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche and Khenpo Thinlas Chosal of Matho Monastery accompanied the relics during transport. The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, received the relics at the Technical Area of Leh Airport. The Ladakh Police gave a ceremonial guard of honour, and monks offered prayers during the reception.

Buddhist Heritage Context

Buddha Purnima marks the birth, enlightenment and mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha in the Buddhist calendar. The Piprahwa relics form part of the archaeological and religious heritage linked to early Buddhism in South Asia. The Ministry of Culture, the Union Territory administration of Ladakh and the International Buddhist Confederation are organising the exposition. The relics are scheduled to return to Delhi on 15 May 2026.
