Solar Filament Oscillations Reveal Magnetic Properties

Solar Filament Oscillations Reveal Magnetic Properties

Solar physicists have developed a stronger method to infer the hidden properties of solar filaments by studying their oscillations. The work uses prominence seismology, a technique similar to seismology on Earth, to estimate magnetic field strength, flux-tube length and internal structure in the Sun’s atmosphere. These results are important for understanding solar eruptions and space weather, which can affect satellites, radio communication and power systems on Earth.

What Are Solar Filaments?

Solar filaments are vast clouds of cool plasma suspended above the Sun’s surface by magnetic fields. When seen at the solar limb, they are called prominences. They can remain stable for long periods, but some later erupt and contribute to coronal mass ejections. Their magnetic environment is difficult to measure directly, which makes indirect methods essential.

Dual Oscillations as a Diagnostic Tool

The study focused on rare cases where filaments show both longitudinal and transverse oscillations at the same time. These two motions provide complementary information about the supporting magnetic structure. By combining them, researchers can place tighter limits on the filament’s physical parameters than with a single oscillation mode.

Bayesian Analysis and Key Findings

The team used Bayesian analysis to merge observations with theoretical models. This statistical approach helped estimate the most likely values of the filament’s properties while accounting for uncertainty. The analysis showed that:

  • The magnetic field strength can be inferred robustly, even with limited knowledge of plasma density.
  • The supporting magnetic flux tubes may be very long, around 100 to 1000 megameters.
  • The twist in the magnetic field lines is generally low, usually less than three turns.
  • Such low twist suggests relatively stable magnetic configurations.

Importance For Solar Physics And Space Weather

The method first estimates magnetic field strength from longitudinal oscillations and then uses that result to constrain flux-tube length and structure from transverse oscillations. This combined approach improves accuracy and can support better models of the solar atmosphere. It may also improve forecasting of solar eruptions and space weather events, which have practical consequences for modern technology.
