ANRF Reviews Research Roadmap

ANRF Reviews Research Roadmap

India’s Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) has reviewed its future roadmap with a focus on mission-driven research, societal innovation and wider public access to scientific knowledge. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem by linking laboratories, academia, industry and government more closely, while making research outputs easier for citizens to understand and use.

Mission-Mode Research Push

ANRF is advancing multiple MAHA, or Mission for Advancement in High Impact Areas, programmes. These are large-scale initiatives designed to deliver measurable outcomes in priority sectors. The model encourages structured collaboration and faster movement of research from early technology readiness to practical deployment.

Societal Innovation Focus

A new MAHA programme on Leapfrog Demonstrators for Societal Innovation is being planned. It will support rapid development and demonstration of scalable solutions for major challenges such as:

  • pollution and climate resilience
  • disaster management and biodiversity
  • sustainable agriculture and transportation safety
  • smarter infrastructure and community health
  • energy efficiency and economic inclusion

SARAL AI for Science Communication

ANRF is developing SARAL AI, an artificial intelligence-based platform to simplify complex research and patent content. It will convert technical material into podcasts, short videos, posters, business briefs and presentations in 18 Indian languages. The aim is to improve scientific outreach and public understanding of research outcomes.

Ease of Doing Research

ANRF has also introduced measures to reduce administrative burden and improve research support. These include nodal officers in around 250 institutions to assist principal investigators. The Foundation has also launched WhatsApp and Arattai channels for real-time updates. It has evaluated nearly 20,000 research applications in four months, including Advanced Research Grant and Prime Minister’s Early Career Research Grant proposals.
